What actually makes oxygen dangerous near fire
Supplemental home oxygen, whether from a compressed gas cylinder, a liquid oxygen system, or an oxygen concentrator, is not itself flammable or explosive. But it is an oxidizer, meaning it dramatically accelerates combustion of anything that does catch fire nearby. If one rule matters more than any other, it's this: nobody smokes in a home where oxygen is in use, not the patient, not visitors, not in another room if it's the same air space, and no open flame (candles, gas stove, fireplace, lighter) operates in the same room as oxygen equipment while it's on. This single rule prevents the overwhelming majority of home oxygen fires. It needs to apply to every person in the household and every visitor, not just the person using the oxygen.
Safe storage for tanks and equipment
Whether it's a portable cylinder or a stationary concentrator setup, how oxygen equipment is stored between uses matters:
- Store cylinders upright and secured, a fallen cylinder with a damaged valve can become a projectile, and a chained or strapped stand prevents this

Signage: a small step that changes response time
A simple, visible 'Oxygen in Use, No Smoking' sign on the front door or near the equipment does two things: it reminds visitors and household members of the rule, and, importantly, it's one of the fastest ways to alert an arriving fire crew to a hazard they need to know about before they're inside the smoke. Signage is inexpensive, widely available from medical equipment suppliers, and worth placing at both the main entrance and the room where oxygen is used.
Traveling and everyday precautions
Fire risk with home oxygen isn't limited to the bedroom or the equipment's usual storage spot, it follows wherever the oxygen and the person go:
- Portable oxygen tanks used outside the home (in a car, at a restaurant) carry the same no-flame, no-smoking rules, including not smoking in a car with portable oxygen running
- Keep oxygen tubing and equipment away from hair dryers, curling irons, and other heat-producing personal care devices
- Avoid petroleum-based lip balms, lotions, or ointments near the face when using a nasal cannula, some are flammable in oxygen-enriched air; ask your equipment supplier or physician for oxygen-safe alternatives
- If a fire alarm sounds anywhere the equipment is in use, prioritize evacuation over trying to shut off or unplug the equipment first
Telling first responders, before the emergency
Visible signage helps in the moment, but the more reliable approach is making sure this information exists before a crew is even dispatched. A fire crew that knows in advance that a specific address has home oxygen equipment can adjust their approach immediately, including where to expect a possible fast-spreading fire and where to prioritize search efforts for an occupant who may have limited mobility.
